Bread and Jam for Frances

Frances doesn’t want to eat anything but bread and jam. Bread and jam is yummy, especially when Grandma makes the jam herself! But Frances doesn’t want to eat spaghetti, or eggs, or soup – just bread and jam. So, her mama stops making her other yummy things to eat and just gives her bread and jam. Soon, Frances is tired of bread and jam and wants other yummy things to eat, too. And when she asks her mama nicely, her mama makes her a very yummy lunch – and no bread and jam!

Is your Mama a Llama?

My mama is not a llama. But little Lloyd is a llama, so is his mama a lama? He asks all his animal friends, but the bat’s mama is a bat and the kangaroo’s mama is a kangaroo. Not a llama! That would be silly. Then Lloyd meets Llyn and asks her if her mama is a llama. The answer is yes! Because Llyn is a llama like Lloyd and their mamas are llamas.

The little boy needed a gift for his Mama. I always know what gift to get my mama (books!), but the little boy didn’t know, so he started asking. He asked a sheep, and a chicken and a goose. They offer him wool, and eggs, and feathers. But his mama already has those things. When he asks the cow, she says to ask Mr. Bear. Mr. Bear knows the perfect gift to give to the boy’s mama – a gift that all mama’s love!

We're Going on a Bear Hunt

Grandma told me she knew this story from when she was a little girl. Mama said her Grandma used to tell her this story, too. And now I love to read it! Going on a bear hunt is fun. Trying to get through the tall grass, and the water, and the snow and into the cave. And then you find a bear! Oh, no! Run, run, run! Back through the cave, and the snow, and the water, and the grass until you are safely home again. And will never, ever go on another bear hunt…until tomorrow night when Mama reads the story again!

The Story of Ferdinand

Ferdinand is a big, big bull. Mama says sometimes bulls are trained to fight in a show. The other bulls wanted to fight, but not Ferdinand. He just wants to sit under a tree and smell the flowers. One day, though, he sits on a bee that stings him! He is so hurt he runs around like the other bulls. The men watching think he is the best fighter of all the bulls and take him to fight in the show. But he doesn’t fight. He doesn’t like to fight. So, they take him back to sit under his tree and enjoy the flowers. And I hope he watches out for the bees!
